Painted Paneling

I am so excited to share my latest project with y'all. I've been painting paneling at my boyfriend's lake house.
So fun to watch it go from dark and dreary...
To bright cottage!

This was a tedious, time-consuming project but I could not be happier with the end result. This room will be topped off with some new light gray carpet at the end of this week. I will post additional pics when it's all decorated.

Project Details:
I primed the walls first with Kilz Latex Primer. This was against better judgement and direction. Oil-based primer is the best thing to use on paneling but I was in a bit of a time crunch with only 2 days to get this room ready. I simply didn't have drying time for oil-based. The latex seemed to work just fine I just hope the paneling color won't bleed through in time.
I rolled on 2 coats of primer and then followed with 2 coats of latex paint.
Wall color-Behr Dolphin Fin (eggshell)
Trim Color-Behr White Fur (semi-gloss)

  1. Your paneling came out great! I've painted all mine too and it makes a huge difference in the feel of the house. I just found you through My Uncommon Slice of Suburbia. Imagine my surprise when your chalkboard had the Hogs schedule, I'm in AR too! Great to "know" someone local :D

    1. Hi Arkansas peep. Even more ironic, i came across another blog at some point that had the Razorback schedule on a chalkboard and that is what gave me the idea. Wooo Pig!

  2. What a huge difference! It takes talent & foresight to know when to paint & when not to - you made the right decision. The room looks so much bigger too!

  6. This is GORGEOUS! I am gearing up to paint our paneling too. I have a question, did you sand the paneling prior to priming it?

    1. Thanks everybody for the nice comments! Angi....i did not sand beforehand. I had heard about people doing that....slick paneling vs. non-slick, sanding vs. not sanding etc. This paneling was somewhat slick. But i decided to skip out on the sanding and i don't think it was a bad choice. Primer and paint stuck fine.

  9. Looks great! I'm in the midst of painting our paneled living room (one coat of primer on so far!). Your walls look so flat after being painted-- did you fill in the cracks or did they just naturally get filled in with all the layers of paint? I'm wondering if the lines will still be visible after the job is done.
